Explore WA hospital data

An inspectable project

Public data, made explorable.

Emergency department presentations at WA public hospitals, 2011–12 to 2024–25.

I built the data preparation, map and accessible table from public AIHW and ABS data. This demonstrates a reproducible data workflow and browser visualisation; it is not an AI-generated analysis or a commissioned hospital deployment.

Explore the figures

These are presentations, not distinct people. Each financial year runs from July to June. The map opens paused on 2024–25; Play advances the years. Picking a year or opening the table pauses playback.

Open the hospital map. Without scripts or WebGL, the table below still shows the latest snapshot year. Downloads contain every year.

What the map can tell you

The cohort contains WA public hospitals listed as open, with coordinates and a reported total in 2024–25. It is not a complete history of every WA emergency department. Closed or otherwise excluded hospitals are listed in the snapshot. The map shows the whole state, so every hospital in the table is on it; on a phone, where the space beside the page is short, it shows the south-west.

A missing or suppressed historical value is “No data”, never zero. On the map it contributes no height; that absence is not evidence of zero presentations. Nearby peaks overlap: at the scale of the state, metro Perth’s ten emergency departments form one combined mountain, whose height is their sum, not any one hospital’s. A numbered badge marks hospitals too close to tell apart; its card adds them up and charts each one against the year before, updating as the years play, and clicking it zooms in until they separate. Pinch, or hold Ctrl (⌘ on a Mac) and scroll, to zoom yourself. Use the table or hover card for individual hospital totals.

Contour height represents counts, not waiting times, performance, capacity or unmet demand. This is historical public data, not clinical advice or a live operational feed. ABS boundaries are statistical approximations.

Expected: Fiona Stanley Hospital — 2024–25: 110,998 presentations. The script checks the snapshot’s SHA-256 hash before reading it. Try 2011–12 for the same hospital to see “No data”.

The archive contains the exact data, preparation and visualisation source used by this prototype, with file hashes and its base repository revision in metadata.json. Local changes are identified separately from that base commit. The website repository holds the project; the archive pins this local prototype’s files.

Refreshing is optional and requires internet access: in a full website checkout run npm run data:refresh, npm run pages, then python3 scripts/package-hospital-evidence.py. Review changes to years, cohort, provenance, table and example before publishing. Browsing this demo makes no data API requests.
